Culturally Responsive Education Programs for Alaska Natives
Alaska's educational system faces a significant challenge in effectively serving its Alaska Native student population, which accounts for about 22% of students statewide. The current dropout rates among Alaska Natives are alarmingly high, nearly 50% in some regions, partly due to a lack of culturally relevant curricula. Schools often struggle to incorporate indigenous perspectives into their teaching, leading to disconnection between the students’ cultural identities and their learning experiences.
Within this context, Alaska Native families and communities are particularly impacted, as many students do not see their cultures represented in the education system.
