Summary

This grant opportunity is designed to support small to emerging nonprofit organizations (or projects hosted within nonprofits via fiscal sponsorship) in a particular U.S. state or region. The focus is on promoting equity, justice, and structural change, rather than simply addressing symptoms of social problems. Eligible applicants can request funding to support core operations (general operating support) or for specific initiatives.

The intent is that the funds be used to amplify voices in underrepresented communities, strengthen community leadership, and promote long-term shifts in power, opportunity, or access. Projects might include community organizing, leadership development, education or training initiatives, public awareness campaigns, or pilot efforts to test new models of justice work.

This opportunity is not open to individuals or for-profit businesses. Rather, it is tailored for nonprofit organizations, tribal entities, schools, or grassroots groups with charitable mission orientation. The geographic catchment is limited — applicants must serve communities within the state (or region) and demonstrate meaningful ties to the area they propose to work in. Organizations headquartered elsewhere may be considered if they show strong local engagement or partnership.

Grant amounts are modest and intended to seed or bolster work, not fully fund large-scale expansions. Applicants may request up to a mid-range sum (for example, in the low five-figure range). The total funding pool is divided among several grantees in a given cycle, with the foundation seeking to support multiple projects across geographic or thematic diversity.

The grant is offered on an annual basis, with an open application period typically spanning the winter months (e.g. December through January). After award decisions, funded projects generally begin in the following spring and continue for up to about one year. Because this is a competitive process, proposals will be evaluated based on how well they align with the funder’s interest in justice, the strength of community relationships, clarity of outcomes, sustainability, and capacity to deliver.

Organizations and individuals based in Alaska who are engaged in Other may be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity. To discover more grants that align with your mission and objectives, visit The Grant Portal and explore listings using the Search Grant tool.
