Summary

This grant opportunity supports community‑driven outdoor recreation and trail projects of Alaska, focused on expanding and improving trails, parks, and publicly accessible recreation infrastructure. Eligible applicants include nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, federally recognized tribal entities, local government bodies, community councils, and faith‑based or service organizations that serve residents in that region. Individuals, for‑profit businesses, private foundations, and political organizations are not eligible.

The program provides competitive grants throughout the year, with multiple application rounds depending on available funding. Award amounts range from small to substantial, with projects funded in tiers up to approximately $100,000. Smaller proposals—typically those at or under $20,000—generally require no matching funds, though leveraging additional resources is encouraged. Mid‑range awards between $20,000 and $50,000 require a minimum 3:1 match (at least half of which must be cash), while larger requests up to $100,000 require a 2:1 match. In‑kind contributions such as volunteer hours are allowed at consistent valuation rates, up to specified limits.

Grants cover a wide array of development and enhancement activities: creation of new trails or parks, physical improvements to trailheads and recreation sites, installation of signage or amenities, planning and surveying, and similar infrastructure enhancements. Operational or programmatic expenditures, reimbursement for completed work, or projects on private land without legal easements are not supported.

Recent performance highlights indicate the program has funded over $2.3 million to date, resulting in dozens of completed projects, hundreds of miles of new trails, and multi‑million dollar leveraging of additional funding. Application cycles are scheduled seasonally—with key open and due dates in late fall and early summer followed by review periods and funding announcements typically within weeks. All applications must be submitted via the organization’s online portal.

Ideal recipients are established nonprofits, tribal or community organizations, and public entities working to build or improve publicly accessible outdoor recreation infrastructure in that Alaska borough. This opportunity is particularly suited to trail-building, park development, or amenity installation projects with clear public access benefits, community involvement, and demonstration of leveraged local support.
