Climate Resilience for Alaska Native Villages
Alaska's Indigenous communities are among the most vulnerable populations in the United States when it comes to climate change impacts. In many Native villages, permafrost thawing, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events have already begun to threaten traditional lifestyles and vital infrastructure. According to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, 31 Alaskan communities are at high risk for climate-induced relocation due to their geographical locations and dependence on natural resources.
Alaska Native tribes and communities face the brunt of these climate-related threats. Many of these villages are geographically isolated, making it challenging to access resources or support systems available in urban areas. This isolation contributes to difficulties in implementing effective climate adaptation strategies that are culturally appropriate and economically feasible. Consequently, there is an urgent need for funding and resources that empower local communities to develop tailored climate resilience plans.
Eligible applicants for this funding opportunity include federally recognized Tribal governments, Tribal consortia, and nonprofit organizations that serve Alaska Native communities. Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of the unique climate challenges faced by their communities, as well as a commitment to incorporating local ecological knowledge and cultural practices into their planning processes.
