Summary

This grant opportunity supports projects aimed at preserving heritage, culture, Native arts, education, and community well-being in Alaska — especially among Indigenous communities in a defined region. It is intended for tribes, Native community organizations, nonprofits, or community groups that are working to sustain cultural identity, arts, history, and community cohesion.

Eligible applicants include tribal entities, nonprofit organizations, cultural groups, or community-based organizations. In some cases, non-Native organizations may also apply — as long as the project clearly benefits Alaska Native descendants or communities affiliated with the region covered by the grant. This grant program is not designed for individuals or standard small businesses, but rather for community-focused, nonprofit or tribal-affiliated efforts.

Projects funded under this program can cover a variety of activities: documenting and preserving cultural heritage; supporting traditional and contemporary Native arts; organizing intergenerational knowledge-sharing between Elders and youth; producing educational or interpretive materials about Indigenous history; exhibitions or cultural events; and other community-based cultural or educational initiatives. The goal is to foster stronger cultural continuity, support creative expression, and reinforce community identity.

Grant benefits include financial support for project costs — ideally covering materials, program implementation, educational outreach, cultural documentation, arts production or presentation, and associated project-related expenses. The funding is flexible enough to support both small-scale and larger projects, depending on their scope and significance.

Projects located in the specified grant region are especially prioritized. To qualify, applicants must submit a project proposal with a clear budget, a narrative describing goals and impact, and a plan for how the project will support cultural preservation, education, or community engagement. Preference is often given to first-time applicants or those who have not received recent funding, as well as to multi-generational projects that bring together different age groups for cultural continuity.

This opportunity is an excellent fit for community groups or nonprofits focused on heritage, cultural arts, education, or community revitalization — especially those working to sustain Indigenous heritage, support Native artists, or strengthen community identity through culturally meaningful programs.

Organizations and individuals based in Alaska who are engaged in Arts, Culture, History & Humanities may be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity. To discover more grants that align with your mission and objectives, visit The Grant Portal and explore listings using the Search Grant tool.
