Civic Engagement Workshops for Alaskan Youth

With a vast expanse of territory and only around 731,000 residents, many Alaskan youth find it difficult to access consistent civic education and engagement opportunities. The state’s high percentage of Indigenous youth, who make up 23% of the total population, are often marginalized within educational systems that fail to address their history and governance.
Who faces this barrier locally? In rural Alaska, where many schools are small and isolated, educators contend with limited resources and a curriculum that does not reflect the unique governance structures present in Indigenous cultures. Additionally, the physical distances between communities make it challenging for students to engage with local government and civic activities, further alienating them from their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Many youth lack an understanding of democratic processes, which is critical for effective community participation.
This grant will provide funding to develop civic engagement workshops tailored specifically for Alaskan youth in rural areas. These workshops will tackle the unique challenges faced by Indigenous students, enhancing their understanding of local governance and the democratic processes that affect their lives.
